2013 Honda Gold Wing F6B on sale at Southern Honda in Chattanooga.

So it's finally time. We have been anxiously awaiting our first shipment of Honda Gold Wing F6B motorcycles here at Southern Honda Powersports. With 62lbs less weight it is going to be a blast to hit the mountains around Chattanooga, Tennessee to get an idea of how agile the bike is. You can bet one thing, we are going to have the best and lowest price on a Goldwing F6B in Tenessee, Georgia, Alabama or anywhere in the southeast. We have had a lot of folks out of Atlanta asking us about the bikes as well and what mods will be available right off the bat. We have worked with RC Components for years so we will have their full line of wheels as soon as the bike launches. We have had several questions about the new F6B that we can address here.

 

1. Will the 2013 Gold Wing F6B have reverse?  No, initially Honda will not offer reverse as an option. As the bike is 62lbs lighter and the weight is distributed much lower, the rider should not experience any kind of "tippy" feeling and since the seat is lower more riders will have feet planted on the ground.

2. Will the 2013 F6B have cruise control? Again, electronic cruise control will not currently be available for the F6B. We have been assured that there are several aftermarket solutions in the works. Also there are current solutions avaiable such as Thottlemeister which we already are a stocking dealer for. If you want cruise, we will make it happen.



 

3. Will the F6B windshield be adjustable? No it will not. Honda purposely made the windshield short and non-adjustable. As of right now this can't be changed. You can bolt on a taller windshield if need be.

 

4. Will Navigation be available on the Goldwing F6B? As of writing this it is not available but we are working in house on a kit that utlitzed factory Honda OE parts to convert.

5. Can you trike the F6B? While there isn't currently a kit available, we will work with California Sidecar to develop the kit. It's a Gold Wing so there is no reason that it won't work.

 

There is a TON of interest in this bike from Harley Davidson Road Glide and Street Glide owners to metric cruiser owners wanting to know about it. We are trying to find out all that we can so we know what needs to be done as soon as the bike hits. AMA Supercross Round #5 Anaheim from Southern Honda

Another round and another winner this week as Ryan Dungey goes from the worst night ever to the best night. Once again we were following the 3rd Anaheim round closely here at Southern Honda and were hoping to see Team Muscle Milk and Team Geico Honda finish consistently and at or near the front. Qualifying started well in the 250 Supercross class with Geico Honda rider Eli Tomac laying down the fastest lap on his 2013 Honda CRF250R. His luck continued in his heat race where he dominated the field and easily moved on to the main event. Tomac's luck did not continue as he got off to a bad start.

Time for the 250 West SX Main Event. 15 laps. Joey Savatgy leads Kenny Roczen and Martin Davalos out of the gate!
Not for long though. Ken Roczen goes into first quickly. Martin Davalos moves to second. Savatgy third. Travis Baker is next, followed by Zach Osborne. Eli Tomac is eighth.

At the end of lap five, Roczen is riding just like he’s done when he won the MX2 World Championship. Strong. Aggressive. Smooth. Stylish. And fast. Martin Davalos is running well in second. Although a ways back, Joey Savatgy in third. Eli Tomac has moved up to fourth.

Fourth is Kyle Cunningham, then Travis Baker, Zach Osborne, and Joey Savatgy. Jason Anderson is next. Cole Seely is having a tough ride in 12th.

That puts Eli Tomac down 20 points to the Red Bull KTM rider with 4 races to go.

The 450 Supercross class again was full of ups and downs for our team Honda riders. Canard, Reed and Barcia all qualified right next to each other. In heat 1 Barcia chased Davi Millsaps all race and ended up 2nd place in his heat. Trey Canard was in heat 2 with some of the big hitters but still managed a 4th place.  Then came the main event. Another pileup took out Honda rider Chad Reed once again. Barcia ripped it and stayed with the lead group on his 2013 Honda CRF450R. Here is the play by play:

Time for the 450 SX Main Event. 20 laps. It’s barely noticeable … but there is a slight mist failing. Not enough to be considered rain. But maybe enough to mist up riders’ goggles quicker than normal. It’s not affecting the track at all.

It’s Mike Alessi with the holeshot! Ryan Dungey is second! Then Trey Canard and Davi Millsaps. James Stewart follows. Then Barcia. Those top six are close.

Towards the end of the second lap, Mike Alessi goes down. Ryan Dungey is leading. He’s now chased by Davi Millsaps. And James Stewart! Barcia is next, then Canard. Villopoto is ninth. Reed is 11th.

Lap four – Millsaps is hounding Dungey. Stewart right behind. Great race.

Running order at the end of lap five – Dungey, Millsaps, Stewart, Barcia, Andrew Short, Broc Tickle, Chad Reed, Matt Goerke, Kyle Chisholm, Trey Canard … where is Ryan Villopoto? Villopoto has dropped to 16th.

Lap 7 – on a tight left hand corner, Stewart goes inside and passes Millsaps for second. Dungey leads, Stewart now second, then Millsaps.

Halfway point – lap ten. Dungey is starting to pull away. He’s on his way to his first Main Event win of the season. Had to go thru an LCQ to do it. And if he wins, it would make a KTM sweep combined with Roczen’s win in the 250′s.

Running order – Dungey, Stewart, Millsaps, Barcia, Short, Chad Reed, Tickle, Canard, Matt Goerke, Kyle Chisholm, Justin Brayton, and Ryan Villopoto 12th out of 20 riders.

AMA Supercross Round #4 Oakland

Round #4 is here and we at Southern Honda have been on the edge of our seats. See, motocross/supercross is a big deal here in Chattanooga, TN. Almost like a religion. Some guys spend their Sundays lapping their favorite track or blasting through the woods. Some pray more riding dirt than they do in church the next week between casing out jumps and catching rocks the wrong way at high speed. As always, we are rooting for our boys (and girls @AshleyFiolek67 ;) ) on their Hondas dirtbikes. The 2013 CRF450R has been performing very well under a wide variety of riders. These top riders are using the new KYB PSF Air Forks with great feedback turning into corners. As always the 2013 CRF250R has been ripping it up front with its updated suspension and Honda PGM FI fuel injection. No doubt, these bikes are class leading. It was a tough weekend for Honda riders as a result of crashes and pile ups. Once again the 250 Supercross class was hotly contested between Honda riders Cole Seely and Eli Tomac. In 250SX Heat 1 Honda rider Eli Tomac went down in the first corner but ended up recovering for a 7th place finish which put him into the Main Event by the skin of his teeth. Seely pulled out a 4th. At this point, he's the point's leader. But not for long. Here is the play by play of the main:

15 lap 250 SX West Main Event – 9:26pm. Joey Savatgy on the 176 KTM in the lead! At the end of the first lap, it’s Cole Seely with the lead, and Ken Roczen giving chase!

As we start lap three – Seely has a nice lead over Roczen, Jason Anderson is third. Joey Savatgy is next, followed by Martin Davalos and Christian Craig. Eli Tomac is 18th.

The top five after five laps are very spread out. Seely, Roczen, Anderson, Davalos, Savatgy. And then Tomac crashes again! He’s on the side of the track – and he’s not getting up quickly. He is heading back to the pits ….

Lap 12. Roczen has closed up right on Seely for the lead. And in a tight right hand corner, makes the pass for the lead! With Tomac out, and Roczen headed for the win, Roczen will definitely take over the points lead.

Obviously, this is not the result we hoped for Tomac being that he was the points leader but Cole Seely put in a tremendous ride to end of with 2nd place. Realize that in the 250 Lites class, the smallest mistake and your falling back. As good as the CRF250R is, even it can't overcome full on crashes in this class. These are the best 250 riders in the world and the championship is getting interesting.

The 450 Supercross main was a tough one for our Honda guys Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, and Chad Reed. After banging through his heat race Trey Canard ends up second place on his way to the main. Then it happened. Villipoto pulls off a wicked holeshot and carnage breaks loose in turn one. Here is the play by play:

The 450 SX 20 Lap Main Event – 9:57pm. Big pile up in the second corner – at least five riders. One rider involved is Chad Reed. He’s first to get going. Josh Grant is another rider – he’s next to get going. James Stewart is another rider involved in the crash. He’s up and running – but very slowly.
Ryan Villopoto is out front. Justin Brayton is running second. Davi Millsaps is third. Mike Alessi fourth. Vince Friese is next. Ryan Dungey is in ninth. Trey Canard is 14th. Chad Reed 17th. Josh Grant 18th. James Stewart 19th – but has pulled out of the race. Justin Barcia is
20th – but also out of the race.


The crash – you can see Dungey was affected, Brayton’s bike, Josh Grant’s bike, Chad Reed (black helmet with Monster logos), James Stewart, Trey Canard, and other carnage …

Ryan Villopoto is already running away with this race on lap five. Davi Millsaps has moved into second – he’s eight seconds behind Villopoto. Third place is Justin Brayton, fourth is Mike Alessi.
Dungey seventh. Canard 10th. Reed 16th. Grant 18th. Again – Stewart and Barcia are out of this race.

On lap 16 Villopoto is out front by over 10 seconds over Millsaps, Ryan Dungey has moved to third. Then it’s Alessi fourth, Canard up to fifth. Canard makes the move on Alessi to move into fourth … Chad Reed is 12th.

Ryan Villopoto has won this race. Davi Millsaps takes a nice second – and maintains his series points lead as the series heads back to Anaheim next Saturday. Ryan Dungey finishes third.

So basically Barcia tanked it and got hurt, Reed got up and pulled out a 12th and our boy Trey Canard ripped it all the way back up to 4th. One year off a broken back, this kid is no joke. We are looking forward to Anaheim.

The History of the Honda V4 Part 4

The V4 Matures as a Race Engine

In 1985, the designation of Honda's V4 powered race bikes changed from RS to RVF, a change indicative of significant technical advances. While the liquid-cooled V4 base engine (such as used in the VF750F) remained fundamentally unchanged, changes in firing order and new 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust systems were featured. For increased chassis rigidity, the aluminium box-section double-cradle frame was changed to a high-rigidity aluminium twin-tube diamond frame. These improvements helped the RVF750 win many important international races, including the Bol'Dor 24-Hour and the Suzuka 8-Hour endurance races. In 1986 Honda released the now legendary VFR750F which was developed based on feedback from the RVF750. This newly designed V4 engine featured a 180°crankshaft, gear-driven cams and more compact engine design. Its impressive performance made it an instant favorite of sportbike riders around the world. The highly refined power unit was used to power many racing machines, including the RVF750. Development continues, and Honda's V4 engines still power winning race bikes around the world.

Powered by a race tuned VFR750F engine, the RVF750 dominated the Suzuka 8-Hour Race and many others. However, because the TT-F1 regulations required all bikes to be based on production machines, only limited modifications were permitted. "We wanted to enhance the bike's race potential and also provide racers with a machine capable of winning," said an engineer. Unlike the production machines, this new race-spec machine would be specially designed as a production bike that could win races. Designated the VFR750R/RC30, the bike would feature the latest racing technology and be powered by a powerful race-ready V4 engine. Special engine features included redesigned cam drive allowing use of smaller cam gears more suitable for high-rpm operation. Other race-spec features included 2-ring pistons and titanium alloy connecting rods. Chassis features included a single-sided swingarm, a lightweight FRP fairing and everything else needed to make the RC30 the most competitive machine in its class. The RC30s were not produced on a production line and were almost entirely hand-built. The machine debuted in 1987, and in 1988 a superbike version powered by a RVF750 base engine won the Superbike World Championship.

AMA Supercross Round #3

Back to Angles Stadium in Anaheim for Round 3 of the 2013 AMA Supercross Season and the 2013 CRF450R is starting really show it's strength and consistency under some of the best dirt riders in the world. Big news for the night was that Kevin Windham annouced his retirement. Kevin has been a staple in the Supercross class for years and has always been known to be a tough and consistent rider throughout his career. Kevin is riding for Team Geico Honda for his final year.

In the 250 Supercross Class after coming in 2nd in Heat Race #2 Honda Rider Eli Tomac was looking strong against his current rival Ken Roczen on his KTM. The 2013 CRF250R that Tomac is riding has been slightly updated for 2013 and we have a few left in stock here at Southern Honda Powersports. Here is a play by play from supercross.com:

It’s time for the 250 Main Event. 15 laps. At 9:23pm it’s Ken Roczen and Cole Seely side by side in the first corner! Seely emerges the leader. There are a couple of falls as well – we can see Max Anstie limping off the track.
The three fastest guys in the class are up front. It’s currently Cole Seely leading Ken Roczen, and Eli Tomac is chasing both of them.
Those top three riders have checked out. Five laps in they are way ahead of the rest of the pack. Seely leads, and Tomac is very close on Roczen.
The top three are very close … and at the end of lap 9 Tomac goes past Roczen on the inside of a left hander corner before the finish jump.
On the start of lap 11, Tomac goes around the outside of the first corner and passes Seely for the lead! It’s Tomac, Seely, Roczen – all still close!



Tomac is starting to pull a slight lead, and Roczen has pushed past Seely. It’s Tomac one, Roczen two, Seely three.

The 450 Supercoss Main Event got off to a good start with Justin Barcia and Trey Canard getting out of the holeshot in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Their pace was looking great until Justin Barcia cased a triple jump and ended up injuring his face on the bars. He split his eyebrow requiring stitches and possibly broke his nose. Not exactly the most fun injury in the world. Pretty much his bike punched him in the face. He had to pull of track because of the bleeding which dropped him to 8th in the Supercross points standings after winning last week's race. He's not out yet, just has to climb out of a hole in a VERY competitive field this year. Here is a play by play of the Main Event:

On lap 2, Trey Canard moves into the lead! It’s Canard, Weimer, Barcia. Davi Millsaps is fourth. Chad Reed is sixth. James Stewart seventh. Ryan Dungey eighth. And Ryan Villopoto is on the move …

Hectic lap. Barcia lands hard from a jump – looks like he hurt his wrist. He is pulling off the track. Villopoto has moved all the way up to second. (Later on some have said he might of hit his face or nose quite hard. TBD.)

As they settle now starting lap six, it’s Canard leading Villopoto by about 2 seconds. By the end of this lap though – Villopoto has rushed right past Canard and into the lead!

Lap seven now – Villopoto already stretching his lead. Canard is second. Davi Millsaps is third. Chad Reed is fourth. Weimer is fifth. And Stewart goes down in a tight right hand corner – he is up and running … outside the top ten.

Lap 12 – Ryan Villopoto is leading by a big margin over Trey Canard. Davi Millsaps is third, and he’s being chased by Chad Reed. Then it’s Jake Weimer, Andrew Short, and Ryan Dungey.

As they start lap 16, Reed moves past Millsaps. And then Millsaps returns the favor! As they start lap 18, Millsaps spins the rear tire a bit too much, and Reed moves by!

This race belongs to Ryan Villopoto. It’s his first supercross main event victory since April of 2012. Trey Canard is second, Chad Reed third.

AMA Supercross Round #2

Team Honda is on a roll already this year! In the 250cc class Eli Tomac took another win on his 2013 Honda CRF250R for team Geico Honda increasing his points lead over KTM's Ken Roczen. Here is a play by play of the race:

250 Main Event! 15 laps! 9:29 pm they take off! It’s 36 TLD’s Jessy Nelson. But at the end of the first lap – it’s Martin Davalos in the lead! Then Nelson, then Savatgy, then Zach Osborne.

Lap three – Eli Tomac has moved to third. Ken Roczen has moved up to sixth. Davalos leads.

Lap four – Tomac goes past Nelson. Davalos has a 3.5 second lead over Tomac.

At the 1/3 point – 5 laps in – Davalos leads Tomac by 2.5 second. Then it’s Jessy Nelson, Cole Seely, Joey Savatgy, and Ken Roczen. Osborne eighth. Rattray 12th. 250 National Champion Blake Baggett did not make the main …

Lap eight – Tomac goes past Davalos for the lead! It’s Tomac leading, with Davalos chasing. A little ways back in third is Ken Roczen. Then TLD’s Cole Seely and Jessy Nelson.

Eli Tomac is out front and cruising. The defending 250 West Champion has won!

The 450 Supercross Final was up next. Justin Barcia won the 1st heat on his Team Muscle Milk 2013 Honda CRF450R followed by Millsaps, Weimer and Chad Reed on another CRF450R. Heat 2 Trey Canard fights hard and holds on to second place and ends up in the 450 Main with no problem. Here is a blow by blow of the main:

450 Supercross Main Event. 20 laps. 9:56 pm gate drops. And it’s Justin Barcia railing around the outside of the first corner with the lead! David Millsaps is second! Chad Reed is third! Ryan Villopoto fourth! Then Weimer, Canard, Stewart.

On the second lap, Villopoto has a quick slide out in a left hand corner. At the end of lap three – the running order is: Justin Barcia, Davi Millsaps, Chad Reed, Jake Weimer, Trey Canard, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto … and Ryan Dungey is 16th …

Barcia is looking strong and stretching out his lead. Davi Millsaps is second. Chad Reed a ways back in third, and Trey Canard equidistant back in fourth. Then Weimer, Stewart, Villopoto, J Grant, Kevin Windham, Andrew Short, K Chisholm, Weston Peick, and Ryan Dungey up to 13th.

Halfway point: Best racing is Canard in fourth is closing up on Reed in third. And Villopoto is starting to close on both of them. Barcia is way out front …

Lap 12 – Canard passes Reed on a tight left hand corner! Barcia out front, Millsaps safe in second … Canard leads the tight group of himself, Reedy, and RV2.

As they start lap 14, Villopoto makes the pass on Reed right near the finish line jump. And at the end of lap 14, Trey Canard has caught and passed Davi Millsaps!

Lap 15 – Villopoto has moved past Millsaps as well!

The running order as they start the last lap – Barcia leads Canard by 5.5 seconds. How about the Honda Muscle Milk team potentially going 1/2? Third is Ryan Villopoto, then Millsaps, Reed, Weimer, Stewart, Ryan Dungey has moved up to eighth. And then Canard falls twice in the same corner!

AMA SUPERCROSS ROUND #1. ANAHEIM, CA.

Supercross 2013 is here and we are as excited as ever here at Southern Honda Powersports. Team Muscle Milk Honda is riding the all new 2013 CRF450R. This bike has a completely new frame, tweaked motor, Pnuematic Spring Air Forks, and dual exhaust to make up one of the most wicked Honda dirtbikes ever produced. Just running the 2013 around our test course vs a 2012, one can feel the difference in the way the bike makes power as well as how stable the bike is on turn-in. The 2012 was sweet, the 2013 is a monster!

Team Honda has an awesome lineup this year in Trey Canard and Justin Barcia so expect good results to be a regular thing for this powerhouse duo. This is Barcia's first year officially on the CRF450R but he is well equipped to run with the top guys in the class. This is just the first round in Anaheim, CA. of two rounds on the year and it is always an exciting race.
